Martin Murray scores an emphatic victory over Leicester’s Kevin ‘Concepcion at Leigh Indoor Sports Centre

He extended his 100 per cent pro record in explosive fashion with an emphatic victory over Leicester’s Kevin ‘The Panther’ Concepcion at the Leigh Indoor Sports Centre. The Barmy Army could clearly be heard in the background too.

The stylish former ABA champion made it 14 wins out of 14 with a display that bore the hallmark of man on a fast track to the upper echelons of the British middleweight rankings.

Concepcion, who entered the ring boasting an impressive record of 14 wins from 15 fights, failed to come out for the third round after sustaining a cut to the head which, after inspection by the ringside doctor, was deemed serious enough to halt the contest.

But although the record books might list the decision as a technical KO, it was more of a demolition job as the man from the Midlands was simply overwhelmed by a pumped-up Murray.

Roared on, as ever, by his very own 'barmy army', the former St Helens Town ABC ace was quickly into his stride and after rocking his opponent with a good right to the head.

He had him down for the first time two minutes into the opening round with a devastating left hook to the body.

A clearly groggy Concepcion eventually staggered to his feet only to be sent crashing to the canvas again before being rescued by the bell.

Sensing an early finish, Murray tore into action again at the onset of the second round but his momentum was halted temporarily by a warning for a low blow.

It was only a brief respite for the beleaguered Concepcion though as another vicious left hook - this time to the jaw - sent him down for a third time.

This was the signal for an all-out attack by Murray but somehow his rival managed to survive until the timekeeper again came to his rescue.

However, that proved to be the last of the action with Concepcion spared further punishment by the doctor's timely intervention.

A delighted Murray said: “On paper this looked like a 50-50 fight but I was always confident and once I'd tagged him in the first it was just a matter of time.

“The plan now is to get some more rounds under my belt but whenever the big fights come along I’ll be ready.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone who has helped me in my career, especially my local supporters and generous sponsors, plus my trainer Oliver and all the lads in the gym.”

Good stuff! Well done to the lad

Don't follow boxing much myself so it's all Greek to me, but my Grandad is obsessed.

Hope Martin does well in the next round.

I think this site definitely needs a section for local amateur sports news and info though. Get it sorted Barry

Hey! I would love that but I can't do everything on this website. Stick a Dyson up my bum and I'll hoover the forum, the gallery and the Magazine too! Oh yes I might just be able to squeeze the Video Tube in as well!

Seriously, we would love to cover Amateur sports on St Helens Now. I would love to get all the local results posted on here.

If anyone can help out, we would love to hear from you.
