Saints ponder Pryce action

St Helens will decide at their next board meeting on Monday whether to take any action against England stand-off Leon Pryce after he was sentenced for assault.

Both Pryce and his former Bradford team-mate Stuart Reardon walked free from court on Thursday after a judge decided not to carry out an earlier threat to impose a prison sentence.

Reardon, 27, was given a 12-week suspended sentence at Bradford Magistrates' Court after last month admitting assaulting his estranged wife Kay after finding out she was seeing another man. Pryce, also 27, was ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work after he pleaded guilty to assaulting Mrs Reardon's new partner in the same incident last summer.

It is the second time Pryce has escaped a custodial sentence. In 2003 he was ordered to do 120 hours of community service after being found guilty of unlawful wounding after glassing a Bradford man.

Both Pryce and St Helens coach Mick Potter declined to comment but Potter confirmed the stand-off would play against his former club Bradford in Friday's engage Super League game at the GPW Recruitment Stadium.

Pryce has continued to play for his club despite the court case hanging over him and has hit a rich vein of form, with four tries in his last three appearances.

His position at St Helens is not thought to be under threat but St Helens chief executive Tony Colquitt did not rule out the possibility of the club handing out further punishment.

"Now he has received his sentence, the board will discuss the matter early next week and make a statement," said Colquitt.

The Rugby Football League have handed the matter over for consideration to their compliance manager but that, according to spokesman Craig Spence, is standard procedure.

What's the general opinion on this?

Should Saints take action against Pryce, or should his private life be kept separate from his profession?

Personally, I think some action should be taken. When people take up careers like this, they should acknowledge that they will be under the spotlight of the media and that they need to consider carefully the consequences of their actions.

By doing this, Pryce could be accused of bringing his employers into disrepute, which could be bad for Saints' image. (Although on the other hand, you could argue that there is no such thing as bad publicity).

Nevertheless, children (and many adults!) look up to these people and view them as role models, therefore they should act accordingly. Okay, so I'm not saying that sportspeople should live like nuns or monks and take a solemn oath, but at the same time there is no excuse for criminal behaviour and even more so when you're under the media glare.

These people are also representing ST HELENS! St Helens isn't in the new much, but when it is, I prefer it to be for positive things!

I think its a pretty shocking story tbh, and a 12week suspended sentence is paltry for the co-defendant.

Children especially look up to these sports 'characters' and they need to have an extra duty of responsibility to their actions (even private life is under scrutiny its the nature of the profession as they know)..

The incident isn't a case of peeing in the street or a misdemeanor of sorts its a serious offence and should have been judged accordingly, i think they both got off very lightly..

Exactly. Some people might argue that their private life is separate to their job, but these people are being PAID to be in the spotlight. It's part of the territory.

I think that what Leon Pryce did was wrong. However, he has been through the judicial system and been given what the courts of law thought he deserved.

He has to go and sweep streets for 100 hours now. The man had the decency to own up to what he did.

The courts have punished him and I don't think they gave him any special favours. I think we should let the man serve his sentence and think more about how good he is on a rugby pitch and how much he gives to Saints.

I'm not a fan of sports tbh (my mum is and she'd probably kill me for my views lol) i'm glad he got community service it may show him some humility..

Everyone in the public eye has a duty of care to their fans and when tickets are pushed in schools (free kids entry) i as a mother have a duty of care to my children i wont let her play with a child that swears! that was my point :)
