The Phonics

The Phonics are a Stereophonics tribute band from St Helens.

They were originally called Mr Writer after "Mr Writer", a song by Welsh rock band Stereophonics, taken from their third album 'Just Enough Education to Perform'. They changed their name to The Phonics around January 2015.

Mr Writer was founded in November 2013 and had been looking to charge their name as early as March 2014 but it was not until October 2015 that they officially published the name change. Clearly, for whatever reason it was a slow process and did not happen overnight.

The last published video as Mr Writer was in March 2014.

The original line up was as follows:

Mr Writer

Band Members: Darryl Ryan - Vocals/Guitar
Steve Ashcroft - Bass
Jon Hooper Lee - Guitar/Vocals
Colin Bennett - Drums

The Phonics

Around March 2014 Jon Hooper Lee was replaced by Kevin McGuire to give the new line up as follows:

Band Members:
Darryl Ryan - Lead vocals/Guitar
Kevin McGuire- Lead guitar/Backing vocals
Colin Bennett - Drums/Backing vocals
Steve Ashcoft- Bass

The Phonics pride themselves as being the number one Stereophonics tribute in the region.

All four members are huge fans of the band, and pay so much attention to detail to ensure they sound as close to the Stereophonics as possible.

Each member has more than 20 years experience within the music industry, performing all over the UK as well as Europe.

Their repertoire encompasses the Stereophonics' back catalogue, from the early singles such as Local Boy in the Photograph and A Thousand Trees, through the hugely-successful Performance and Cocktails material and UK number one Dakota, up until Keep the Village Alive singles.

The Phonics also include the singles "All In One Night" and "Caught by the Wind" from the 2017 album 'Scream Above The Sounds'.

As with nearly all tribute bands there are no original recordings by The Phonics and all their material is through videos produced live at various concerts.
